DEATH OF BISHOP JOHN GERRY
At 7am last Wednesday morning, after a brief illness, Bishop John Gerry died surrounded by family and friends at Holy Spirit Northside. John Gerry was born in Rosalie in 1927 and educated by the Sisters of Mercy and Marist Brothers at Rosalie. He entered Pius XII Seminary to commence his training for the priesthood completing his studies in Rome where he was ordained on 21 December, 1950. After his return to Australia the newly ordained Fr Gerry served as Parish Priest at Cooloongatta/Burleigh Heads, St Stephen’s Cathedral, Stafford and Herston. His Episcopal ordination was on the 29th of July 1975, at the Cathedral of St Stephen. Next Thursday the day of his funeral mass, would have been the 67th anniversary of Bishop John’s ordination to the priesthood.
Vigil prayers for Bishop Gerry will take place at St Brigid’s Church, Red Hill this Wednesday, December 20th beginning at 7pm. All are welcome. Bishop Gerry’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at the Cathedral beginning at 11am. All members of the Cathedral and St Patrick’s parish are invited to attend and celebrate Bishop John’s life.
