Funerals

Information for Celebrating Funerals in The Cathedral of St Stephen, St Stephen’s Chapel & St Patrick’s Church

At the death of a Christian, whose life of faith was begun in the waters of baptism and strengthened at the eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end nor does it break the bonds forged in life.

The Church also ministers to the sorrowing and consoles them in the funeral rites with the comforting word of God and the sacrament of the eucharist.

Christians celebrate the funeral rites to offer worship, praise, and thanksgiving to God for the gift of a life which has now been returned to God, the author of life and the hope of the just.

Preparing a funeral

Preparing a funeral for a deceased loved one is an emotional experience for families and the desirability of celebrating a Funeral in the Parish Church of the deceased’s own community should not be underestimated. Your Priest will guide you through the process of preparing the liturgy, however the following will be of assistance when the funeral is to be celebrated at the Cathedral:

  1. In the first instance, the Cathedral should be contacted by the Funeral Director to ascertain that the Cathedral is available.
  2. The daily liturgical timetable of the Cathedral should not be interrupted.
  3. All readings are to be from Scripture.
  4. All music must be sacred / liturgical.
  5. Christian symbols placed on the coffin are to be appropriately Christian.
  6. One (1) eulogy is permitted.
  7. There is no parking for the congregation during the week; however limited car parks will be available for the immediate family.
  8. The cost of using the Cathedral will be discussed at the time of the arrangement and is dependent on the family’s association with the Cathedral and financial capacity. The cost will include:
    • flowers on the Cathedral sanctuary
    • Cathedral organist
  9. A soloist/cantor can be provided at an extra cost.
  10. The Cathedral does not have the provision for power point displays etc, there is however provision for the liturgy to be live-streamed over the internet. Live-streaming will incur an extra cost.

A Cathedral priest will be available to celebrate the funeral, if required.
